My Paradigm Shift

This is actually my first ever medium update about me, from the title “paradigm shift” it is obvious I had a moment just now and that moment lead me to medium.

So here is what happened, its my first year post NYSC, yeah 2020 does not count and not exactly having a moment of regret but my period in lockdown was not efficiently used but indeed it is never too late or better late than never right.

My first introduction to the tech world was during service when someone made mention of needing some set of people to join in his coding club with talks about Laravel etc. but he preferred intermediate skills like a sorta side-hustle thingy so I ran to google and I slept there cause the information was a hell lot from programming to data analytics to AI, my tiny skull was blown away. and what stood out for me the most was that people in the tech space in Nigeria has been around for a long time and I never came across any on twitter which I found super strange, so I reached out to the guy and he agreed i could join with plenty funds burned on data bundles trying to watch YouTube clips and the rest but I was able to catch up pretty fast with the basics and I loved the rush that comes with each project.

Everything was going on smoothly with I and my team members until the Trainer had to leave and remote class was not a thing then and this made me realize I tend to learn more or do better when taught via physical interaction i.e my most proffered form of learning is in-person.

my journey was put on hold due to some reasons and most people i did interact worth in the tech space did have a computer science background.

the paradigm shift that moved me here was that I ,met a lady briefly and she has a masters in Chemistry and currently working remotely with a tech company in Germany like I was shocked as her tech story was self taught and had the opportunity to join the Andela bootcamp, I did remember my HNGi boot camp experience and boy was it hectic but I was just lost and felt out of place but she did give me a tip that most times joining the bootcamp a second time gives you a better chance at understanding things and an edge over others.

I will be starting my 30days JavaScript calendar and I will keep you updated all the way.

It seems this is not the mode or system of writing on medium but it is my story and I choose how I tell it.

Advice: Trying to make a switch to tech from any career point, make sure to do this;

  1. Make your research and know what roles fits best for you or you interested in, as it is a very big space you have to carve your niche so as not to get overwhelmed or intimidated by it all.
  2. No matter how the day feels like, all show up. Consistency is important
  3. Find a community to follow in your chosen niche
  4. Take your time and go at your own pace as you are only in competition with yourself
  5. You got this… even when it looks like you don't, just know you do.
